What to test for on a Tucson-area well.
Hardness
Southern Arizona groundwater is mineral-heavy. Hardness is almost always present and is what a softener addresses.
Sediment and turbidity
Sand, silt, and grit are common on wells and will chew through valves and fixtures if they are not filtered out first.
Iron and manganese
These cause rust-colored staining in sinks, tubs, and laundry, and they foul softener resin if they reach it untreated.
Total dissolved solids
High TDS affects taste and is the main reason well households add a reverse osmosis system for drinking water.
Bacteria and nitrates
Private wells are not regulated the way municipal supply is. These should be tested by a certified lab, especially near agricultural land.
